Tony Award-nominated actor/singer Joshua Henry is well-known and respected in the Broadway theater circle. But The Scottsboro Boys and Hamilton alum aims to become a household name by moving beyond the curtain call and releasing his debut EP Guarantee. “This EP is full of my heart,” Henry reveals, “but I also want people to jump and groove to it, to feel it cerebrally, spiritually, and bodily.”
The title track sets the tone for the impressive four-track collection of modernized vintage soul. Henry explains, “‘Guarantee’ is about the things we look at as certainties in life. Is it a thought, a person, a gadget, a belief system? I had to ask myself that question in 2020 when I wrote it, and I have to keep asking myself that question now.” We agree that life is full of uncertainty, but after listening to the infectious groove – where Henry not only flexes his vocal range, but effortlessly drops bars – it’s an indisputable fact that this song makes one helluva first impression.
He successfully keeps our attention throughout the remainder of the EP as well, with stellar vocals and musical arrangements. In addition to being instantly likable, “Hold Me” (a mid-tempo tune that sees Joshua get vulnerable as he requests love and support while pursuing his dream) and “Possible” (an inspiring tune that encourages us to face our fears and dare to believe) both show off his smooth falsetto. Henry closes the album with an incredible cover of legendary soul group The O’Jays; but surprisingly, it’s not one of their classic hits. Instead he opts for their empowering 2019 song “Stand Up,” encouraging us to stay involved and keep striving for a better world.
