Queen Naija has a message for the haters on her new single "Hate Our Love." The songstress brings fellow Detroit representer Big Sean along to help tell the tale of a relationship that's solid as a rock despite what everyone else has to say about it.
Producer Mike Woods hooks Queen and Sean up with a familiar sample of Bobby Glenn's "Sounds Like A Love Song" on "Hate Our Love." Released on Glenn's 1976 album Shout It Out, "Sounds Like A Love Song" was most famously sampled by Jay-Z for his 2001 hit "Song Cry." Over the years, the song has been utilized extensively in hip-hop by rappers such as 2Pac and Outlawz, Childish Gambino and Drake to name a few.
Now it's Queen Naija and Big Sean's turn to flip the track, and they bring it into hip-hop soul/R&B territory. Big Sean's bars on the intro are underscored by the original's harp intro and some soulful backgrounds from Naija. She takes over from there to sing about being crazy in love with her do-right man.
Although their union is good, there are some people who insist on talking bad about them. "And I know that they / Hoping and praying on our downfall," Queen sings on the pre-chorus. "Won't be satisfied until we break up / Hate it when we make up." Big Sean returns for the bridge to silence all the chatter with lyrics like, "I can't be worried 'bout mentions, f**k who ain't us."
Clearly inspired by the gossip folks who insist on minding her business with her real-life partner Clarence White, Naija gives them more to bump their gums about in the "Hate Our Love" lyric video. The couple invites viewers into a hotel room that's decorated like a Valentine's Day fantasy with heart-shaped balloons, rose petals on the bed and candles everywhere.
Sparks fly between Queen and Clarence as they share a few intimate moments that are all being captured by a photographer. The lyrics appear on the bottom of the screen, but you'll be too caught up watching them to even notice. The clip ends with a nod to the viral Money Challenge with the love birds spelling out the song's title with money on the floor.
"What I’d like for people to take away from ‘Hate Our Love’ is don’t let anybody come in between anything or anyone that you love," Queen Naija stated about the song via press release. She said what she said and is 10 toes down for her beloved. Later to the haters.
