Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Nija Charles has been honing her skills over the past few years and securing opportunities to mastermind lyrics for some of the music industry’s biggest artists like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Cardi B and SZA. Now, the GRAMMY Award-winner who simply goes by Nija is set to embark on her own journey as a solo artist, and she's come through with the new single "Finesse."
On “Finesse,” Nija flaunts her melodicism and ability to document her experiences into the form of a song. Birthed from a series of true events, “Finesse” tells the story of a woman who is determined to avoid getting entangled with the lies of her ex-lover. “You got bad intentions, baby, I could tell / You don't like seein' me with nobody else / So you come and give your affection / But I know it’s just finesse, finesse,” she sings, on to his game. Although she’s only 22, Nija has a story to tell, which makes her work so relatable. The silky guitar strings paired with the synths, piano chords and Nija’s vocals create quite a vibe.
Dropped in conjunction with a visualizer directed by Jay Weneta, the lush visuals are provocative, seductive and sultry all at once. It showcases the protagonist and antagonist intertwined with one another, body to body, as she sings her truth. Nija confronts her lover over the fact he’s preying over her emotions to keep her in the palms of his hands. However, she recognizes the game and declares that she can’t be finessed anymore, seeing straight through his intentions.
“Finesse” is expected to appear on Nija's debut project, which is anticipated to drop before the end of the year. In the meantime, get into “Finesse” and her previously released single, “Ease My Mind,” both of which are available on all streaming platforms.
