In this modern climate, artists have to find ways to keep relevant and get their music heard. Our girl Jody Watley knows the deal and has taken advantage of the ever-changing landscape in our playlist culture by offering up myriad singles and EPs. That includes the release of her latest effort, the Winter Nights EP.
Winter Nights sets the mood to offset the chill of winter with "Winter Nights (Prelude)," a piano-driven instrumental that's warm and inviting. It's quickly followed by the Alex Di Ciò remix of her and SRL's newest single "Weigh On Me." The song has an airy and ambient feel thanks to the mellow mix and the silky vocals. While those attributes definitely draw you in, the song's message about being there to take the weight of their lover's problems that really makes the track stick with you.
Rounding out the rest of the EP are Alex's remixes of two of Jody's lesser-known gems, "Skin Deep" and "Candlelight." The former extends the silky groove of the original, making it extra warm and sensual. "Candlelight," meanwhile, is changed from a neo-soul groove into a strutting track perfect for dancing the night away. The short-but-sweet set then ends just as it began with quick reprise of the opening prelude.
When announcing the release of Winter Nights, the singer also intimated the possibility of future seasonally themed EPs coming in the future. With the vibe she's conjured on this one, we really hope Jody Watley makes good on her promise.
