DMV band Spur of the Moment has been a staple on the Washington, DC music scene for the last 25 years, due to their unique blend of contemporary jazz and R&B. Their talents have allowed them to work with many notable artists, such as Will Downing, Maysa and Lalah Hathaway. Over the years, guitarist and founder Wayne Bruce, along with percussionist and original member Kevin Prince, have remained the driving force behind the band through various changes in the lineup. Now joined by Eric Parker (keyboards), Skip Pruitt (saxophone), Tim Steele (drums) and Mark Walker (bass), Spur of the Moment is ready to take the next step in their musical journey.
The band is making their video debut with “In Too Deep,” the first single from their upcoming fourth studio album. Joining them for their video debut is the track’s featured vocalist, Levi Stephens. The Bounce-Worthy artist has been slowly making a name for himself through touring and promoting his 2010 debut album, This Way. He also had a hand in composing and lending his vocals to Chuck Brown’s posthumously-released single, “Beautiful Life.”
Not only is “In Too Deep” their video debut, it also marks the band’s debut on a movie soundtrack as well. The song is featured in Cru, an award-winning independent film directed by Alton Glass and centering on the reunion of four high school friends as they confront their tragic past and cope with adulthood. Part lyric video, part movie trailer and part introduction to the band, the video’s direction could’ve used a bit more cohesiveness. Having said that, though, the real star -- the song itself -- is well-crafted and shines through beautifully. The band creates a warm and breezy musical backdrop heavily accented with Latin-influenced jazz and Caribbean rhythms. Levi’s vocals infuse the song with a soulful tenderness that immediately connects with the listener.
While we wait for the band’s official release of N 2 Deep, we can keep up with them on Facebook and download their previous offerings on Amazon.
