When word broke that none other than TLC (well, really just T and C) would be featured on his upcoming album Born Sinner, I was anticipating what J. Cole, T-Boz and Chilli would bring to the table. Now my wait is over, as J. has released "Crooked Smile" to the masses. Overall this is a good look for Cole. The self-deprecating yet boastful lyrics make the rapper seem even more likeable, the R&B-esque groove sounds great in headphones and the addition of the choir toward the song's end is an inspired choice. However, after Cole's bragging about TLC's appearance on the track, I was expecting a bit more from the now-duo. They're reduced here to just singing the hook (which seems to be mostly T-Boz with a barely there Chilli adding a bit of flavor) and a few ad libs. Honestly, anybody could've sang this hook, including Cole himself, and it would've had the same effect. In other words, this reeks of a publicity stunt. Still, it's more enjoyable than Cole's last leak, the B.I.G.-ripping "N*ggaz Know." Listen to "Crooked Smile" below and let us know what you think about this unlikely team-up.
