Tweet’s Southern Hummingbird is one of the finest debut albums of the early aughts. The songstress took R&B by storm back in 2002 with her sweet, sexy vocals and a Missy Elliott co-sign and feature. Over two decades later, the set is a bonafide classic that still goes hard in the paint. It’s only right, then, that when Tweet was recently in Washington, D.C. that she was invited to perform selections from the album on Noochie’s Live From The Front Porch series.
On a cold winter’s day, Tweet immediately warmed us up after a quick introduction from the host Noochie. She emerged through the front door of the modest brick house dressed in an aqua blue-colored fur hat, long plaid coat and black sweats. Accompanied by a five-piece band and three background vocalists arranged on the porch and lawn, Tweet perched herself on the stairs to sing.
And sing Tweet did, starting with her flirty single “Call Me.” The track came alive with the legendary songstress, band and singers all locked in. She then gave fans a treat by performing two of Southern Hummingbird’s beloved album cuts – “My Place” and “Smoking Cigarettes” – that showed off her vocal and songwriting prowess.
Tweet concluded her soulful trip down memory lane with her debut single “Oops (Oh My).” She saved the best for last and sang her biggest hit like the rent was due. The energy of the closing performance was on another level as Tweet and company gave us the track we all know and love mixed with both reggae and go-go.
