When LION BABE rounded out their 2023 with their single “Love Another Time” and promises of their upcoming album The House Of LION BABE. We’ve been waiting patiently for news on the album ever since. While they haven’t given us a firm release date just yet, they are back with brand-new music as the duo give us their take on André 3000’s romantic classic “Prototype” just in time for Valentine’s Day.

With this being a LION BABE cover, you already know that they once again take it to the house. The LB version of “Prototype” begins with glitchy, distorted vocals fading in and out of the speaker. That’s then resolved with a clap as wobbly synth bass and a shuffling groove pulse behind singer Jillian Hervey’s vocal on the first verse. The mixture of distortion and warm bass over the shuffling groove is a theme of the song, taking it from the original’s sublime and ethereal to something more futuristic and otherworldly.

This definitely ain’t your mama’s “Prototype,” but like their covers of A Tribe Called Quest’s “Bonita Applebum” and Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You” before it, LION BABE has fun making this one all their own. You can stream their take on the modern classic when you press play below. And since you’re gonna want to add this one to your playlists, you can do that right now on digital music platforms.
