It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since the highly talented Leon Thomas delighted us with his debut album Electric Dusk last August. The singer-songwriter has been quite busy ever since, including performances, appearances and behind-the-scenes production work for some of your faves. He hasn’t forgotten about his own career, though, and proves so with the release of his latest single “MUTT.”
With a title like “MUTT,” one would think that the song would be all about Leon being a dog. Instead, the song focuses on his reluctance to let his guard down. Over a smooth, piano-led R&B production tempered by kick-focused percussion — courtesy of producers Freaky Rob and D. Phelps — he speaks to his apprehension when it comes to trust.
“I have smoked already, so pardon my bluntness / I see past pretty faces, so I got trouble trusting,” he sings on the opening verse. By the pre-chorus, however, he reluctantly allows himself to be open to the possibilities, singing, “But I’ll let my guard down for you / Said I’ll put my guard down for you / Said I’ll be vulnerable / So you can break my heart if you want to.”
The song also comes with a short visual that reflects his fear of commitment. It begins with him tapping into his inner track star as he runs down the street, a dog hot on his heels chasing and barking after him. After getting through only a minute of the song, the singer eventually makes it to his car and speeds off, revealing a license plate that reads “MUTT” in the process.
Leon Thomas might have another one with this one. Take a listen and a look at the stream of “MUTT” and its visualizer when you head below. And if you want to check Leon out on the road, head to his website to find out when he’s playing at a venue near you.
