We’ve been rocking with iyla for six years now, though it seems like we just discovered the budding performer. In that time, she’s given us three EPs — War + Raindrops, Other Ways To Vent and APPETITE FOR DISASTER — and a plethora of sassy singles. Now she’s finally ready to deliver her first full-length project with her upcoming album Weeping Angel due this August. But before that happens, she gives us another kiss-off track like only she can with her new single “Corset.”

Produced by frequent collaborator Kadis, “Corset” has the sound we’ve come to expect from iyla. A woozy, hip-hop-influenced beat is mixed with choral harmonies and a sinister bass line to set the song’s mood. Meanwhile, the singer ruminates on a love that sometimes feels sleek and sexy but is ultimately suffocating.

“You’re too tight / Skintight / Criss-cross, cross-stitch / You’re a corset down my back / And I peel you off like that,” she sings at several points in the song. “You’re too tight / Skintight / Untie / Goodbye / I might kiss you good-good night / And sing you a lullaby.”

“I wrote ‘Corset’ to paint a picture of a situationship that feels more like restriction than romance... tight, binding, sultry, but ultimately suffocating,” iyla said of the track in a press release. “As the song builds, I lure a lover back in with a siren call, only to send him away again — too clingy, too attached, and destined to be put to bed once again.”

For the song’s visual, iyla becomes a living angel statue perched atop a pedestal. The video focuses on the look more than any narrative, splitting the screen into thirds to give us three times the focus on the impressive makeup. That focus also gives her the chance to emote and prance around the screen with an eerie allure.

The look is also featured on the cover for Weeping Angel, which is set to arrive on August 8th. The album is an accomplishment for the singer, who channeled the grief she felt from losing her mother into a new creative vision. While the world waits to hear the full 13-track set in full, you can listen to “Corset” and watch its visual right here. Then scroll further to see the album’s cover art and tracklist.
