It’s JANE HANDCOCK’s time. The first lady of Snoop Dogg’s Death Row Records is making some of the best music of her career as she rolls out her sophomore album on the label, It’s Me, Not You. She introduced the project with the lead single “Stingy,” which has had us in a chokehold for months. HANDCOCK strengthens her grip on our headphones with her follow-up singles “Can’t Let Go” and “Stare At Me” featuring Anderson .Paak.
After catching feelings in “Stingy,” JANE is caught up and down bad in “Can’t Let Go.” Also produced by Soopafly (this time with co-production from WhoInGodsName), the song almost feels like a continuation of the love affair she found herself in with her sneaky link on “Stingy.” Despite her better judgment, she’s “hooked fa sho” on this man and his good loving.
“I can’t seem to get it right / I know that you’re no good / For my mind, my heart, my soul / When you’re near / I walk into your room / My morals disappear,” she sings, throwing caution to the wind. She knows that she’s doing the most, but as she sings on the chorus, “I can’t let go (ohhh) / I think I’m just an addict for your love.” A smooth interpolation of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin And Juice” on the bridge adds the cherry on top.
HANDCOCK enlists the songwriting and vocal talents of Anderson .Paak on “Stare At Me,” and they’ve created quite the groovy bop with N.W.I. on production. They bring the funk with a slapping bass line, horn section and rhythmic percussion underscoring their fun, flirtatious back-and-forth. The song’s intro, with its trumpet instrumental and talking in the background, evokes Tom Browne’s throwback classic “Funkin’ For Jamaica,” but JANE and Andy bring modern California funk to the floor.
The duet partners are mesmerized by each other and can’t keep their eyes to themselves when they link up. “Something ’bout the way you stare at me / Think you might have put a spell on me / Something ’bout the way that you stare at me / Keep watching, baby, please / I know you’re liking what you see,” they take turns singing on the chorus after their respective verses.
JANE HANDCOCK is three-for-three with her new singles, and we suspect there’s much more heat where they came from. We’ll find out on Friday, July 11th when It’s Me, Not You drops in partnership with gamma. and Death Row Records. In addition to .Paak, the 15-track LP will feature songs with Snoop and BJ The Chicago Kid.
