Lady Wray has been blessing us with new music all year, and we couldn’t be happier. The singer started off by dropping the soulful El Michels Affair-produced cut “Best For Us” before pivoting with the ’80s boogie-influenced “Be A Witness.” She then offered up the emotional “Time,” which took us on a tumultuous journey through love. The singer is now ready to show us the project that spawned these songs, with her announcing that her new album Cover Girl will be arriving this September. But before its arrival, she’s giving us more with new track “You’re Gonna Win.”
“You’re Gonna Win” leans further into the lo-fi ’80s sound that marked “Be A Witness,” with synths galore, piano, programmed drums and a insistent hi-hat keeping the time. The sound feels like discovering an unearthed gem while thumbing through your parents’ vinyl collection, which we think may be precisely what Lady Wray and El Michels Affair were going for.
The singer also manages to subvert expectations on the lyrical and vocal front as well. Though the title might lead one to believe that this is a motivational anthem, it’s actually encouraging her man to give her the “sweet, sweet loving” that she craves. And once she gets what she wants, a choir of voices lets him know what the prize is.
“You’re gonna win / All of my loving / You’re gonna win / All of my loving,” they joyously sing as Lady Wray ad-libs. “Goodness, goodness / You just won the lottery.”
“This has been the clearest window into my brain and how I’ve been feeling lately. This is a let your hair down, love yourself, treat yourself, colorful fun awakening explosion,” the singer formerly known as Nicole Wray said of her upcoming album. “I’m thankful to Leon Michels for producing this collection of songs — he understood the assignment. Hope you love it as much as I do.”
