The happy couple – who rekindled their romance in 2023 after dating for approximately a decade between 2003 to 2013 – have decided to take their relationship to the next level. This week, Ashanti made the announcement that they’re expecting their first child together and engaged to be married in an exclusive interview with ESSENCE.
After months of speculation and wearing loose-fitting Balenciaga jerseys, Ashanti confirmed her worst kept secret to the magazine on the heels of posting a surprise video to social media. In the video sponsored by Proov, a diagnostic testing company specializing in at-home fertility tests co-owned by Nelly and Ashanti, the singer is seen in quick glimpses getting ready to go on stage at a concert while everyone around her is abuzz. Her momager Tina Douglas beckons for her to come on and asks how much more time she needs. A clearly pregnant Ashanti finally appears from behind a curtain and quips that she’s “gonna need about nine months.”
The official news of Ashanti’s pregnancy was made all the more sweeter by the big reveal in ESSENCE that Nelly popped the question. “This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope, and anticipation,” Ashanti shared with the publication. “Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé, and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience.”
