We’ve been caught up in the rapture of Lalah Hathaway’s brand-new album VANTABLACK for the past week since its release. The collection features a star-studded guest list that includes Michael McDonald, Common, Phonte and MC Lyte, but perhaps no star shines brighter than Hathaway herself. She’s gone on record calling this project her best album yet, and we’re inclined to agree. Lalah is celebrating the positive reviews and warm reception that VANTABLACK has gotten, and she took the celebration to The Kelly Clarkson Show on Juneteenth.
Although Lalah didn’t appear live in Kelly Clarkson’s New York City studio, she delivered a recorded performance of her single “So In Love” filmed like a music video. The clip begins with a scene of Lalah fluffing her hair in the bathroom mirror before she proceeds to walk and sing around a fly condo. The camera follows her through one of the rooms before she steps out onto a patio where three dancers are two-stepping to the beat. She busts a quick move with them then walks back inside to the kitchen where more folks are gathered.
Lalah is in her element surrounded by her village at this kickback. We get glimpses of her beloved mother Eulaulah Hathaway, her background singers Kalo King and Jason Morales and even dancer Aubrey Fisher who recently starred in Netflix’s docu-series Dancing For The Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult.
The music video-style performance was shot in one continuous take and ends with Lalah joining everyone out on the patio to move and groove to “So In Love” in the sunshine. We don’t know about you, but this is our kind of carrying on. If your summertime kickback doesn’t vibe like this, don’t invite us.
