A good song is timeless. That’s something that singer-songwriter Ambré knows a thing or two about — especially since she’s got a GRAMMY or two to show for it. Perhaps her appreciation for songcraft informs her latest single, her take on Robin Thicke’s 2006 smash “Lost Without U.”
“Lost Without U” was Thicke’s breakthrough single, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a tender ballad full of vulnerability and has an irresistible hook. Rather than completely reinvent it, Ambré instead goes the straightforward route. That means keeping the song’s acoustic guitar riff and gentle percussion mostly intact while delivering a subdued vocal performance that feels warm and inviting. When she does veer from the original, it’s for small moments that infuse the song with her unique approach (including a few final seconds that bring a slightly harder beat to the affair before fading out).
Ambré also keeps that same energy in her self-directed music video for the song. In it, we see the performer posted up with just her guitar (and occasionally her bike) as she invites us into her world. She performs the cut at home first, shrouded within the curtains of her room as she sings by her window. She then takes things on the road before lying back in the grass and looking earnestly into the camera. It all feels quite cozy and altogether lovely.
“Lost Without U” is the latest cover from Ambré, who offered up her own rendition of Sade’s “Stronger Than Pride” last September. She hasn’t specified, however, if this signifies that a new project is on the way. Either way it goes, we’re just glad that her take on the modern-day classic exists. You will be, too, when you check out both the song and its visual below.
