We haven’t gotten any new music from Andra Day since she released the sublime “Phone Dies” back in 2021, and we’ve been craving some newness from the singer-songwriter ever since. It looks like our hopes are becoming a reality as Andra has announced that her new album Cassandra will arrive this year. She’s also giving us an inspired first listen to the project with its lead single “Where Do We Go.”

For the song, Andra taps into a simple, soulful sound. The song begins with just her voice and bass guitar as she sings the cut’s refrain, “Where do we go? / How you been living? / Just passing through your neighborhood, from down on Woodman.” Once the premise has been established, the song comes further alive as drums, guitar, keys and layered backing vocals join to reinforce the slow burn of a groove.

The vocalist takes her time as she establishes the song’s narrative. It becomes obvious that she’s talking to a former flame with whom she might be interested in rekindling. As she sings of the magnetic attraction they share, the listener can’t help but be pulled in as well. But she also expresses her reluctance to let things go too far, creating a push-pull tension that makes the deceptively simple song that much more intriguing.

In addition to her new single, we’ll be seeing and hearing more from Andra Day in the first quarter of the year. She’ll be shining at this year’s Super Bowl singing the Black national anthem “Lift Every Voice And Sing” on February 11th. Meanwhile, Cassandra is scheduled for a tentative spring release, though no hard date has been set. Prepare yourselves for what the multi-talented Ms. Day has in store when you listen to “Where Do We Go” and watch its official visualizer below.
