Mya has traveled all over the world during the course of her 25-year career. She seems to have an affinity for one particular foreign country, however, racking up passport stamps and frequent flyer miles to Jamaica. Since 2019, she’s filmed three videos on the island: “Handsfree” with Ding Dong, “Only You” with Jah Cure and her latest, for the new single “Whine” featuring Bounty Killer.

Not only does Mya love Jamaica, she also loves the sound of the tropical paradise and fully embraced dancehall reggae. Ever since her classic collabo with Beenie Man on his 2000 jam “Girls Dem Sugar,” Mya and dancehall go together real bad. Fast forward to 2023, and she links up with Beenie’s Verzuz competitor Bounty to dance the night away on “Whine.”

Mya rides the bounce and thump of DJ Hardwerk’s riddim straight to the dance floor where she entices her dance partner to take off his cool and let go. “So come and catch a vibe / Flex on me, don’t be shy / Flow with the rhythm and desire,” she commands on the pre-chorus.

The drinks are strong and so is the chemistry between the pair who can’t keep their eyes or hands off of each other. Bounty Killer provides ad-libs throughout the song and drops a spicy hot 16 to talk his ish. “She back it up-up / Mi fill her cup up / She haff di buff buff / She feel di tuff tuff from she get it, she love-struck,” he spits.

The pair take that sexy energy to the visual for “Whine,” filmed on location in Kingston, Jamaica. It opens with Mya and her girls sitting outside bored to death until she presses play on a boombox cassette deck and the track fills the air. It’s on and poppin’ from there as we witness Mya traipse through her bungalow and whine up, whine down and whine it to the ground. She meets her friends back outside, and they turn the courtyard into a dancehall as more people join their revelry, including Bounty Killer who makes a cameo.

“Whine” is Mya’s first new song of the year following deluxe reissues of her self-titled debut album Mya, which celebrated its 25th birthday in April, and her third album Moodring, which turned 20 in July, both filled with previously unreleased extras.
