Our girl Coco Jones started the year off right by snagging her first GRAMMY win for Best R&B Performance for “ICU.” If she has her way, though, there will be many more wins coming from her camp. She shows that she’s not messing around with the release of her newest single “Here We Go (Uh Oh).”
The first thing that listeners will notice is that the song has a prominent sample of Lenny Williams’ seminal hit “’Cause I Love You.” This isn’t quite a love song, however. Instead, it’s a woeful lament about a revolving door situationship that Coco just can’t seem to get away from. Previous collaborator Cardiak, along with Kelvin Wooten, gives the sample a bit of sparkle with bluesy piano and drums as Coco brings the drama with her vocals.
“I know when you said, ‘Goodbyе,’ you ain’t mean no goodbye / Herе we go, uh-oh / I know when you get to likin’ my pictures it’s time / Here we go, uh-oh,” she belts on the chorus. “Over and over, and over we grow / Older and older, and older, but so / Soon as I finally meet someone else that I like / Here we go, uh-oh.”
The singer also gives us drama in the song’s music video. She plays a star getting ready to take the stage. However, while things seem to be going her way (with even a potential new beau in the audience), her situationship comes calling. He’s blowing up her phone and occupying space in her head as she prepares to take the stage. She’s still ever the professional, though, and pulls off the performance without a hitch despite Mr. Wrong giving her the eye from the audience. Coco is approached by a guy after she leaves the stage, but it’s not specified which one it is — even after she decides to leave the venue with him in tow. Instead, we’re offered the familiar adage that it’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.
