When Halle Bailey was announced to play Ariel in the upcoming remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, it was met with obvious controversy from the closed-minded people of the world. However, those of us who are more enlightened always knew that the singer/actress would soar in the role. After seeing her in action in the film’s recent trailer, we now get to hear the first real test with the release of her rendition of the film’s signature song “Part Of Your World.”

“Part Of Your World” has always been the showstopping centerpiece of the film and requires a capable singer to show Ariel’s awe and naiveté when it comes to the world of humans. Halle proves that she’s more than up to the task with her take. She captures the youthful feel of Ariel’s personality with her vocal as she expresses her longing to be where the people are.

Halle also brings out her good singing here. Her vocal talent was never in question, but the singer shows us just how versatile her gift is with a Broadway quality vocal that’s quiet when it needs to be and belts out to the rafters when required. Most importantly, though, she shows all the little Black girls out there that they, too, can be magical princesses and stars in their own right.

“Part Of Your World” will be the centerpiece of The Little Mermaid soundtrack when it’s released on Friday, May 19th. The film itself will swim into movie theaters the following week on Friday, May 26th. Listen to Halle Bailey deliver a masterful rendition of the song, watch the visualizer with clips from the movie and check out her character poster for the film below.
