Mary J. Blige's Protege LaNeah Leaves Us With More Questions Than Answers

I will admit that I'm on Twitter more than a little bit. It's my CNN of sorts. Now that we have that confession out of the way, I was more than intrigued when I saw Mary J. Blige's tweet about a new artist signed to her Matriarch label named LaNeah (for those interested, she cowrote "Love Lockdown". Moving on). Looking at the video for her new song "Screamin' My Name," however, left me with more questions than answers. Peep the video, then peep my theories about this whole situation after the bounce.

  1. Pardon my saying so, but this song kind of sounds like those commercials that come on Urban radio that advertise for local Hip Hop-minded clothing stores.
  2. This song fits the East Coast phenomenon of the obligatory Summer jam by an unknown hot young thang, does it not? Hey, it worked for Amerie, so maybe it'll work for her.
  3. Did she really just sing "Now I'm the 'it girl', I'm that bitch"?
  4. Why was this old ass Jay-Z beat used? And if so, isn't this something someone could have produced and mastered using a laptop and ProTools in a bathroom?
  5. What is the deal with the producer's hair in this clip? My man, you are killing that perm, but you are not Jermaine Stewart, and I don't want no cherry wine. Uh-huh.
Despite Mary's latest missteps and the fact that this track sounds like a throwaway track from Mary's next album, I still have a special place in my heart for her because, let's face it, MJB provided the soundtrack to my late adolescence. Just listening to My Life brings a mixture of tears and happiness that just cannot be duplicated by any other album released during that era. However, something just seems to tell me that this whole LaNeah thing is really Mary's husband's pet project and "producer" Kendu Isaacs, ifyouknowwhatimsaying. And get your mind out of the gutter, 'cause I ain't saying all that. All in all, I think LaNeah is a cute girl, and I think her career may go as far as the end of this Summer. Unless she, too, gets impregnated by Lil Wayne, which will give her only about another month of relevance. What do you guys think of LaNeah? Let us know in the comments.
