"Material Star" is the latest offering from the South Carolinian singer-songwriter-composer, and comes from her upcoming album, Juneteenth Revolution. Another multi-talented artist, Akil Dasan, guests on the track. If that name sounds familiar, it could be because like me, you watched Jessica Betts compete against him and others on The Road To Stardom with Missy Elliott back in 2005 (what ever happened to her?). With a vibe reminiscent of India.Arie's "I Am Not My Hair," Collette regrets being blinded by her desire to have money, cars and the ability to buy out the bar, to the exclusion of having a real relationship. For good measure, she throws in a few bars of social commentary on our general obsession with materialism and challenges us to refocus on things that really matter in the world.
