'You Don't Have To Be A Star' Because Gods'Illa & Maimouna Youssef Are The Ones Shining

Growing up, one of my mom's favorite songs was "You Don't Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show)" by Billy Davis, Jr. and Marilyn McCoo. She loved the husband and wife duo ever since they were in the group The 5th Dimension, so when they branched out on their own she was right there to buy their albums and play them constantly. Despite my hearing this song more times than I care to remember in my younger days, I have a newfound appreciation for it and my mother's righteous vinyl collection as an adult. I also appreciate the DC-based rap trio Gods'Illa for sampling this track and flipping it quite lovely with the addition of singer Maimouna Youssef on "You Don't Have To Be A Star." Made up of brothers Acem Eternal Mind, God Allah Truth, and Powerful Rasheem Mathematics, Gods'Illa combines tight beats with even tighter lyrics on their 2011 update. Mumu Fresh sounds exceptionally good here and adds just the right amount of soul with her lush vocals. This track is off of Gods'Illa's upcoming CPR Blendtape hosted by DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown. Don't recognize the name? Well, that's just Erykah Badu's DJing alter ego. Keep an eye out on The Smoking Section for this joint to drop soon, but in the meantime, grab this song for your head-nodding pleasure right now.
