Singer, songwriter, author and entrepreneur Mashonda currently runs a business that helps to empower women in the visual arts named Art LeadHer. Her company may be her focus, however, with the release of a new single "Positive Distraction" and the announcement of a forthcoming EP Note To Self, it's evident that music is calling her once again.
The song, co-written by Mashonda and producers The Millennials, is all about the happy, heady feelings of finding the one who makes you believe in love again. She translates those feelings into words with lyrics like, "Out of the blue / I feel a new light as the moonlight / I got a view / Way overdue / Love at first sight / Turn this world upside down."
“Positive Distraction” borrows a little from the iconic song “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” by The Police. The chorus interpolates its melody from the '80s classic and features a Sting-like voice singing, "He’s a positive distraction / From a negative reaction / In my heart."
“I was on my way to the studio and 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' came on," Mashonda said via press release about how the song came to life. "I was singing in the car, and when I got to the studio, I couldn’t get the melody of the hook out of my head. So, I played it for the producer. I said, ‘Give me a track.’ I started singing what became my version of that song.”
The visual for “Positive Distraction” is beautifully shot by Push & Pull and begins with the primary focus on the singer's legs as she lounges in bed wearing a luxurious sequined robe and light blue knit outfit. Slowly more body parts are revealed, but we don't actually see Mashonda's face until almost a minute into the video. As the video progresses, we get more shots of the songstress enjoying her solitude in her bedroom, looking flat-out gorgeous and bringing tasteful sensuality.
“Positive Distraction” is Mashonda's second new single of the summer following the July release of "Forbidden Fruit." Both tracks will be found on Note To Self, which is scheduled to arrive this fall.
