Kehlani & Little Simz Claim Their Seat At The 'Table'

Bay Area singer/songwriter Kehlani continues to drop gems in preparation of her upcoming album, SSS. We’ve been treated to “24/7,” “CRZY” and “Distraction,” in just the last few months. Now it seems that Kehlani is getting just as anxious as her fans to get new music out there with the surprise release of her latest song, “Table.” Fresh out the booth, Kehlani couldn’t wait to share her collaboration with rapper Little Simz and released the song before it was even finished being mixed. But is it as good as hot fish fresh out the grease? We’re inclined to say yes.

Produced by longtime collaborator Jahaan Sweet, along with DJ Dahani and DJ Relly Rell, "Table" samples the 1996 SWV hit, “Use Your Heart,” (which itself samples the B.T. Express tune, "If It Don't Turn You On (You Oughta Leave It Alone)”). Over a midtempo groove, the ladies let you know exactly what they bring to a relationship, as Kehlani confidently but humbly sings that she’s a “Down to Mars chick,” and states, “I know I’m not no messiah / And I am far from a prophet / But if the earth set on fire I think I know how to stop it.” North London-representer Little Simz comes through with a passionate verse to round out the song, warning, “Steady dealing with madness / So I pick up my chalice / ‘Cause what’s life without balance?”

The “You Should Be Here” singer is putting the finishing touches on the SSS, which is slated to be released sometime this fall or winter. The album is highly anticipated, as Kehlani’s star has only risen higher and higher since her first project, 2014’s Cloud 19 EP. Puff Daddy even thanked her for saving R&B.

While, we wouldn’t exactly go that far, we think that Kehlani is a very talented singer/songwriter with very bright future ahead of her. We’ll find out just how bright when her new album drops before the end of the year.
