While we were already head over heels for Gallant’s moody duet with Jhené Aiko "Skipping Stones," we think the video may have just made us fall in love all over again. The inventive clip, filmed in the one-shot style, is an inventive narrative that brings the pain, anguish and subtext of the song to life in vivid detail.
Directed by American Millennial and produced in conjunction with Red Bull Music, “Skipping Stones” is a simple but engaging visual. While the storyline isn’t anything new, as Kanye West did a similar treatment in his video for "Flashing Lights," it’s the execution of the idea that makes it a winner. In the clip, Jhené Aiko has apparently kidnapped Gallant and has him tied up in the trunk of a late model BMW. While Gallant is trying to figure out where he is and escape, Jhené is in the driver’s seat contemplating her actions. Undeterred by a little thing like having a conscience or scruples, Jhené steps out of the vehicle, throws a lighter on some old rags in the back seat and walks off like Bernadine from Waiting to Exhale.
Thankfully, art isn’t imitating life and Gallant, aka Mini-Maxwell, will still be around to serenade us for hopefully years to come. He’s currently performing around the country on his first tour.
