Butcher Brown Unleashes An Impromptu Cover Of D'Angelo's 'Brown Sugar'

Richmond, Virginia-based group Butcher Brown are honoring their funk forefather and hometown hero D’Angelo today with an impromptu cover of his classic 1995 breakout single “Brown Sugar.” DJ Harrison, Corey Fonville, Keith Askey and Andrew Randazzo make up the band of Jellowstone Records musicians and Richmond’s best-kept secret. If you have never heard of them before, then this authentic jam session recording very well may be the perfect introduction.

While you can find Butcher Brown backing the likes of Braxton Cook and Sam Reed, this quartet’s sweet spot is best found when they’re grooving together in the cut of some hidden venue with no inhibitions. This remarkable remake of “Brown Sugar,” or “BrownShooguh” as they call it, proves that. The boys of Butcher Brown manage to flip D’s soulful ode to that sticky green into a structured shed with such ease. Honestly, the only thing that’s missing from this session is the youthful mumblings of our beloved Black Messiah himself. This isn’t the first time that the Butcher camp has tipped their hat to the singer either. Just a few short weeks ago Butcher Brown keyboard player and acclaimed producer Harrison unleashed a flip of “1000 Deaths” that knocks so hard that you may need a neck brace after hearing it.
