While we wait for Kendrick Lamar's sophomore LP, he's gifted us with an uplifting ditty about love, specifically the love of self, in the aptly titled single "i." Produced by Rahki and mixed by Ali, the track features a sample of the Isley Brothers' 1973 hit "Who's That Lady." A preacher opens the track with a testimony reminding us that you can't love others without loving yourself, and then church begins when Lamar starts rapping and singing "I love myself" in the chorus. On top of a funkdafied beat and Carlos Santana-inspired guitar riffs, we see a softer side of Lamar that makes us want to cuddle next to him.
If the Top Dawg Entertainment rapper could just rub some of that confidence on us everyday all would be right with the world. We know Kendrick Lamar is no stranger to sampling other genres, lest we not forget that explosive rock and rap collaboration with Imagine Dragons, so we can pretty much confirm that Lamar is a true fan of rock. Keep your mind and ears open when you listen to "i" and channel the obvious message in the track when you sing along at the top of your lungs with Kendrick on the chorus.
