Jazmine Sullivan Has A Message For All The 'Stupid Girls' Out There

Jazmine Sullivan NPR Barbershop Performance

Jazmine Sullivan has been slowly but surely unveiling more and more new music from her long-awaited third studio album, Reality Show. She gave us “Dumb” earlier this year, performed “Mona Lisa” during McDonald’s 365Black Awards telecast and now she’s whipping out another new number on us with the help of NPR. While in New Orleans this past July for the 20th anniversary ESSENCE Festival, Ms. Sullivan met the lovely people of NPR at the Clear-Vue Barbershop just off of Canal Street to serenade the city’s finest gentlemen with a song that she’s calling “Stupid Girls.”

Now you would think that a soulful songstress sharing a song in a barbershop would be sensual and maybe even tantalizing, but not this time around. “Stupid Girls” finds Jazmine sending out warning shots to women across the world. As the strums of an acoustic guitar fill the room, she tells of a relationship that she gave her all in but still found herself left hurt and confused. “What will it be?/Don’t want to end up like me/So use you’re head, don’t be a stupid girl,” she sings in her signature warm tone and of course, with passionate riffs in tow. By the song’s end the men seemed a bit hesitant to applaud, as I’m sure the song’s powerful message certainly wasn’t what they were expecting. Check out this incredible performance of “Stupid Girls” for yourself and get prepared for the release of Reality Show later this year.
