It's easy to apply the "British Frank Ocean" label to someone like Kyan, and as it is a compliment, there is a little more to the Cambridge newcomer than a comparison with a peer. After taking a taste of his debut single "Rosetta," I'm impressed at the layers that get peeled back in this. From its atmospheric opening that mirrors the cinematic aural landscaping that Active Child is known to concoct (specifically on last year's "Subtle") to the skittish and soulful breakdown that carries the song to an exciting ending, Kyan has penned a love ode of a different and fresh breed. The free download of "Rosetta" will tide me over till Kyan's next venture, but color me anxious to hear what The Purple Experiment EP has in store when it's released this coming March.
