World, meet saxophonist Braxton Cook. He's someone that you should definitely keep your eye on. And don't let his baby face fool you, as his talent is fully grown. After cutting his teeth on the road with jazz man Christian Scott, the saxophonist, who was a recent semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, formed his own quartet with keyboardist Samora Pinderhughes, bassist Chris Smith and drummer Corey Fonville. And now the Braxton Cook Quartet are ready to show what they've got with their song "Wide Open (Summer of '95)." The song, with its dreamy Fender Rhodes chords, sultry saxophone and solid bass and drum foundation, is a perfect introduction to the foursome as the slow burner shows them in fine form. And while there are no words here to illuminate exactly what the title means, the playing alone brings to mind the loves of summers past, hot, hazy and all too quick, but indelibly leaving their mark. Braxton is currently busy preparing the release of his debut album Sketch. While you wait to see that fruits of that labor of love, luxuriate in the loveliness of "Wide Open (Summer of '95)" below.
