M.I.A. Tries To 'UNBREAK' Her Heart With A 'Mixtape'

With her upcoming album Matangi set to drop this November (after the rapper/singer threatened to leak the project in an effort to get her label to stop dragging its feet), defiant Sri Lankan femcee M.I.A. drops new track "UNBREAK my Mixtape." The track serves as the ultimate four-and-a-half minute break-up mix, incorporating samples of melancholy love songs like a cover of "Wishing on a Star," Blur's "Tender," Carly Simon's "Why" and Karen Dalton's "I Love You More Than Words Can Say" over hard-hitting drums. "Did you fight for me/Did you cry for me?" an unusually sentimental M.I.A. sings. It's a very interesting switch from her usually brash demeanor. Could her split with fiancé (and father of her child) Benjamin Bronfman last year be the inspiration? That's for Ms. Matangi to say. However, the song itself is a very honest and interesting listen.
