Have A 'Breakdown' With Alice Russell

There isn't much to be said about British soul sistren Alice Russell that hasn't already been said on these pages before. Adele, Duffy and Winehouse may be the blue-eyed soul singers that lit up the charts and became household names, but for me it's all about Russell. Over the years she has turned her hand to Latin, soul, funk, dance and dub, and everything in between, and I'm yet to hear her take a single misstep. Her latest track to surface, "Breakdown," is no different, delivering gut-wrenching power and a funky good time to anyone who presses play. We have already featured a video of Alice performing the track live, but this time we have the studio version that appears on the Magic Mike OST (no I haven't checked out the film, neither am I likely to). Interestingly this version of the song features an uncredited male vocalist who, I have a sneaking suspicion, is the one-and-only Darondo, a little-known, underground '70's funk/soul singer who has had somewhat of a revival of late amongst funk enthusiasts. My educated guesswork is based on nothing more than the fact that a) it sure sounds like Darondo, and b) Alice talked about working with him on tracks in an interview for Wah Wah 45s' Conversations podcast almost two years ago to the day. I may be proven wrong on the feature, time will tell, but I think SoulBouncer's will agree this is one helluva track regardless.
