I'll admit I'm swaying on the fence concerning Nelly Furtado's new single, "Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)" off of her upcoming summer release, The Spirit Indestructible, as there is good, bad, and just plain ugly wrapped up in it. First the good: Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins provides a firehouse beat that surges haphazardly in a dancehall mind frame and is no doubt ready for some summer lovin' in the clubs. Plus the final minutes could burn a hole in the floor -- slaying it is. The bad: Furtado seems a bit too, well, good for this, as this sounds more like C-side material from an basic pop tart than first single bait for someone who's got five highly diverse albums in her pocket -- regressive it is. The ugly: Furtado has always sung "from the nose" in her usual rap-sung style, but she's really got this screechy nasal thing going on here and it's well...annoying. Think Alvin and the Chipmunks on acid annoying. So a grower (or a thrower) "Big Hoops" is depending on your mood as of current. While I'm aware that the spunk of 2006's Timbaland dominant, Loose, and the abstract n' arty aspect of 2003's Folklore won't be duplicated for the The Spirit Indestructible, it's going to have to jump through some bigger hoops for me to get excited, because this first taste doesn't make me want to try seconds.
