Hip Hop Honors Committee Vindicates Itself...Sort Of

delasoul-slickrick-hiphophonors.jpgProving once again that it continues to have relevance among a public for whom "old school" means "last year," the VH1's Hip Hop Honors is set to roll out the red carpet for its 2008 honorees this October 7th. Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Slick Rick, Naughty By Nature and Too $hort will all be feted with the Honors' usual court jester, Tracy Morgan. Last year we gave our picks as to who should be honored. The overwhelming majority agreed that both De La Soul and Slick Rick are long overdue in their recognition. I'm still confused as to why A Tribe Called Quest received their honor before De La Soul who introduced Native Tongues to a wider audience than the Jungle Brothers ever could. And to that end, where are the ladies? Queen Latifah is long overdue and likely has "had it up to here" over not being honored yet. I'm scratching my head a bit about Naughty By Nature and Cypress Hill being named, especially when it's simply a shame that EPMD, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and Gang Starr haven't been honored yet either. And as far as Too $hort is concerned, no comment from this blogger who never understood what the hype about his "freaky tales" was about. In any case, I'm sure it'll be fun all around, as long as Vivica Fox doesn't show up and try to dance around on stage like she's the fourth member of Salt-N-Pepa. Oy
