Tinashe is set to drop her newest album Popstar in just over a week. She’s been thrilling us with her single selection just far, with jams “Crash Out,” “Melatonin” and “Too Easy.” But she’s not content with just giving us three songs to dance to. She gets into her relationship bag and slows things down just a step to give us a two-fer with the double single “Pillow Fight” and “I’d Rather Be Alone.”
“Pillow Fight” starts off simple and innocent with a loop of twinkling piano that soon meets knocking drums. But the sweet sounds belie a song that’s all about Tinashe’s libido. She quickly breaks that illusion on the chorus when the bass kicks in and gets down and dirty. “On sight, you’re what I like-like / I’ll take you to the bed, I’ll get you right-right / Give it to you good, you can spend the night / We can roll around, have a pillow fight.”
“I’d Rather Be Alone” gets a bit more serious as the singer touches on a toxic relationship that needs to end. Airy synths and buzzing electric guitar offers an interesting juxtaposition between vulnerable and rugged as Tinashe pours her heart out as she reaches her limit. “Oh, if pain’s the price of lovе, then I just can’t accept it / And I don’t wanna say this, but I just gotta send it,” she sings with conviction on the chorus. “’Cause, oh, I, I’d rather be alone / Than wait around for better with you.”
“Pillow Fight” is the only one of the two to get a music video. And, interestingly enough, it might be the first to ever feature bed choreography. We see Nasty Nashe in several revealing outfits as she flips, writhes, bounces and does the splits to the song’s beat atop several beds. Even with all that, she manages to rarely break eye contact with the camera. It’s sexy for sure and will have you trying to plan your next sleepover at Tinashe’s crib.
So far, it doesn’t seem like Popstar has a bad song on it. We’ll find out for sure when Tinashe drops the project next Friday, September 25th.
