LAYA may be a city girl, but she fantasizes about country living and lots of lovin’ in her latest song “Yeeha.” The Staten Island native wants a change of scenery and pace from the concrete jungle, and she’s ready to saddle up with a fine cowboy.
Co-written by LAYA and her frequent collaborators Chad Paul and Dante Carter, “Yeeha” finds the singer dreaming of seeing a man about a horse and putting the ride in trail ride. She pulls up on her dream guy, talking slick out of the gate. “Well, butter my backside and call me a biscuit,” she utters at the song’s beginning in a sexy Southern accent. “I ain’t from the farm / I came from over yonder / Prayed on a star / That you’d play me like guitar / Get the rope / Lasso hold / Saddle like, yah,” she sings over a slinky instrumental that blends icy R&B synths with the country twang of pedal steel guitar.
Her fantasy becomes reality on the chorus. “You make me say / Yeeha / You make me wanna say / Yeeha / You make me scream / Yeeha,” she blows while in the throes of passion. “All I wanna, all I wanna do is say yeeha / Yeeha / Giddie up, baby / Yeeha / All I wanna say / Yeeha / To the rhythm, babe / Yeeha.”
The lyrical content and instrumentation are a vibe, but LAYA’s vocals are the headliner. She starts singing chill and subdued before putting her range on full display with her harmonies, hootin’, hollerin’ and high notes.
LAYA brings the dream theme to the visual for “Yeeha.” We join her on a New York City subway train, looking straight out of the early aughts with a bandana covering her sleek tresses while she listens to her iPod through wired EarPods. This ain’t no ordinary train ride, though. As the animated train speeds through a tunnel, we see that all the ads on the car are promotional posters of LAYA.
The train eventually disintegrates around the songstress, and the scene changes to a sunny day outdoors in the countryside. The background continues switching to a cornfield, a field of singing sunflowers, a farm and a galloping herd of white horses. The subway train soon reappears out of nowhere to scoop LAYA back up, and we see a sign on the car doors that poignantly reads, “Do not dream on train.”
“Yeeha” is LAYA’s second single of the year, following her springtime banger “LUber.” Though she hasn’t indicated whether there’s a new album in the works or if these singles are simply one-offs to tide fans over, one thing’s for sure: our creative queen LAYA doesn’t miss.
