What happens when two of R&B’s most promising male stars meet on wax? Wonder no more, as Lucky Daye and Leon Thomas have combined forces. The two crooners and contemporaries have circled one another’s orbit for quite some time, but they finally link for “Fly U Out,” the latest single from Lucky’s upcoming, as-yet-untitled debut on Warner Records.
The track, a follow-up to the sensual and icy cool “Nowhere Fast,” feels warm and inviting in ways that song doesn’t. That’s courtesy of simple production, consisting mostly of guitar, piano, kick and snare. Those elements support the romantic verses, though things pick up with heavier drums, snaps and hi-hats joining in a third of the way in.
As the title implies, “Fly U Out” is all about booking a plane ticket to bring their lady loves to their city. Daye sings of wanting to close the distance between him and his lady. “All of these texts ain’t enough / All of these pictures, just because I ain’t witchu,” he sings. “Baby take off, hurry up / Need your attention, I’ll be sending your ticket.”
Leon, meanwhile, is over video calls when all he wants is the real thing. “You goin’ missing like a waistline / Showing kitty off on a FaceTime / Yeah, you all about me, but you ain’t mine / No, you heard about me through the grapevine,” he croons.
Lucky might be willing to buy a plane ticket to get what he wants, but he gives ladies what they want with the song’s visualizer. In it, he strolls down a corridor lit only by blinking lights. The lights catch the singer in all the right places, reflecting off the shiny leather of his outfit and glistening against his exposed torso. Not much happens in the clip, but it’s quite effective despite the lack of action.
Lucky Daye and Leon Thomas don’t disappoint with this collaboration, though we wouldn’t be mad if Leon was involved just a bit more. That being said, “Fly U Out” has us packed and ready to go whenever Lucky decides to drop this album.
