Jorja Smith is serving fans another appetizer from her new album What Are The Odds before she delivers the main course this Friday, August 21st. Following the blazing singles “What’s Done Is Done” and “Alive” featuring Wizkid, she brings more fire with “I Lied, You Lied.” This time around, Smith is done with her relationship and dancing her way outta the front door.
Producer P2J is back in the mix, co-producing the track with Marco Bernardis. The pair lays down an infectious electronic groove highlighted by bass, percussion and saxophone. The beat is hot, and Jorja brings her signature cool as she confronts her lover with some hard truths throughout the song, which she had a hand in co-writing.
She wastes no time letting him know that it’s officially over. “You know I’m already out there, outside / Please, you can’t hold me back there, no,” she sings on the first verse. Jorja makes it clear that she tried to make it work, but there’s no fixing them. She ends the verse with, “Been back and forth for three whole weeks / The highs aren’t high enough for me / Been down enough to know where this leads.”
In case he still doesn’t get it, Jorja keeps talking before she starts walking on the second verse. “You said you’re in love with her / Still standing in front of me / Meanwhile, it’s all a game / Just took me a second to see beneath / Oh, won’t you just get over me? / The truth is you weren’t hard to leave,” she sings.
“I Lied, You Lied” arrives with a visual filmed on location in Mexico City, where Jorja recently opened for Harry Styles during a six-night series of concerts on his Together, Together Tour. Director EphoExecutive captures Ms. Smith lounging in her bedroom chatting on the phone with a girlfriend who tells her that her man gifted another woman the same diamond necklace that he gave Jorja. Instead of staying in bed depressed after hearing this news, she gets up, writes the word “BYE” in red lipstick on a mirror and goes downstairs where she has an argument with her so-called man.
The scene then flashes forward to Jorja strutting through the streets on a mission while also flashing back to show the couple together when they were happier. When we rejoin the songstress, she’s finally reached her destination: a jewelry store. Her girl picks her up from the store in a white lowrider, and we notice that she’s a few stacks richer after pawning the necklace. The ladies go for a joyride around Mexico City to celebrate Jorja’s freedom.
With “I Lied, You Lied,” Jorja Smith is officially three-for-three with bangers from What Are The Odds. We fully anticipate this album going into heavy rotation upon its Friday release. Pre-game by pre-saving/pre-ordering the album now.
