When Dawn Richard released her albums New Breed and Second Line, we didn’t realize that the singer-songwriter would be giving us a series dedicated to her native New Orleans. Eight years after starting it, Dawn is ready to complete the triptych with her upcoming album creole culture. While we’ve already heard a bit of what’s in store on her Durand Bernarr-featuring duet “baby, can we?” earlier this summer, she gives us a little more by dropping her latest single “enough.”
Like “baby, can we?” before it, “enough” utilizes a very familiar sample. This time around, it’s Sister Nancy’s Jamaican dancehall classic “Bam Bam,” which floats in the track’s ether, dancing around the song’s piano melody and soulful horns and weaving itself into the song’s fabric. There, it helps Dawn tell her story of attempting to be enough in love while coping with the mistakes she makes along the way.
The track begins with the singer cooking up breakfast for her lover after a passionate night. However, instead of serving up a chef-worthy plate, she ends up burning toast and listing all the things that she’s not. Rather than feeling down about herself, though, she acknowledges her rookie status when it comes to love and strives to be whatever her lover needs.
“I just wanna be / Enough, enough, enough, enough, enough, enough, enough, enough for you / Baby,” she sings on the chorus.
Dawn’s “enough” and “baby, can we?” are just the beginning of the magic that will be heard on creole culture. The album will contain 11 songs and boast several features — including Bernarr, Big Freedia, Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph, Frank Richard of Chocolate Milk and Tarriona “Tank” Ball.
