Beyoncé has a way of keeping her fans talking. The diva proved that in July when she surprise released an official version of “MORNING DEW (DONK)” years after a demo leaked to the public. Now, after already causing a stir, she creates yet another by releasing a four-song remix pack that includes a much-talked about mix featuring a rare verse from her loving hubby JAŸ-Z.
The JAŸ-Z remix opens and closes the remix EP in both explicit and clean versions. This one is perhaps the most different from the official version, with a darker, more hip-hop feeling beat thanks to a sample of Sheck Wes’ viral hit “Mo Bamba.” This choice decidedly kills the romantic vibe for more of a turn up. But don’t fret, this version also brings back the interpolation of Goodie Mob’s “They Don’t Dance No Mo’” that leads to a beat switch that incorporates The Isley Brothers’ classic “Between The Sheets.” It’s also where Jigga steps onto the scene to lavish praise on his wifey and talk a little s**t in the process.
“Coming through Malibu in an old-school / Clothing is archival, Alaïa, but we know the truth / Put these hoes on mute,” he rhymes at one point. “Let me put you up on game / B***h so bad, I had to give her my last name.”
The remaining two remixes hew closer to the R&B script. The “MORNING DEW (DONK MIX)” adds some newer instrumentation, including guitar and strings. But most important is the inclusion of new drums that bring an almost metallic sound to things and an 808 bump that’s made to rattle speakers. “MORNING DEW (DONK) ACOUSTIC 4:44” strip away the drums, hand claps and 808s in favor of an acoustic guitar and subtle snaps. In turn, it turns up the romance to 11 and extends the song’s length by 40 seconds to make the runtime add up to her and JAŸ’s special number.
The remix pack definitely reimagines “MORNING DEW (DONK)” in unexpected ways, and we’re sure fans will find a new version (or two) of the song they love.
