Anthony Hamilton was in the DMV area for a concert at MGM National Harbor this past Friday night, but before he left town, he had another stop to make. AHam, The Ton3s, his live band and his crew pulled the tour bus up to the wildly popular performance series Live From The Front Porch.
Hamilton’s debut on the series was such a big deal that radio and television legend Donnie Simpson was on hand to introduce everyone’s favorite soul brotha. Anthony dapped Donnie up as he exited the house, and he came into view rocking a sleeveless suit and trucker hat that read “Country Boy.” He kicked his set off with the hook from his Jadakiss collab “Why” before segueing into another collab, the Nappy Roots song “Po’ Folks.” Quickly running through snippets of both tracks, Anthony took his time from there and focused on some of his greatest hits for the remainder of his set.
He dug in the crates and landed on his 2003 album Comin’ From Where I’m From to sing the title track. Anthony started humming while The Ton3s harmonized, and they collectively had it sounding like a church service out there on the lawn as he sang the blues on the autobiographical cut.
The soulful baritone then turned his attention to a few love songs from his catalog. AHam sang his 2005 single “Can’t Let Go” and followed with 2008’s “The Point Of It All” before completing this portion of his set with “Charlene.”
After all that yearning, pining and testifying his love with that trio of slow jams, Anthony decided to get the party started for his final selection. He ended on “Best Of Me” and transformed the smooth steppers’ groove with a funky go-go beat. (We’re definitely going to need to hear this go-go version next time he performs in the DMV.)
