Tyla’s A*POP era is in full effect. Her sophomore album is shaping up to be a big summer release led by the singles “IS IT,” “CHANEL” and “SHE DID IT AGAIN” featuring Zara Larsson. Before the new set drops on Friday, July 24th, Tyla has some burning questions in her new track “IS IT LOVE.”
The South African baddie seeks clarity in her relationship and needs answers — now. She makes it clear that she’s the one, not the two in the first verse. ”Ain’t an option, you can’t pick and choose / I’m the only one that light up your mood,” she sings in a cadence similar to Normani on “Wild Side.”
In the second verse, Tyla needs her man’s actions to back up his words. She sets him straight, singing, “You know how many times I heard I was cute? / Can’t just say it, I need to see it, I need proof / I need somebody that’s gon’ water my roots.”
Not only does Tyla need action, but she needs to see some emotion from him to know it’s real. “Is it love? Is it love if you don’t cry, cry, cry? / It don’t mean s**t if I don’t see tears in those eyes,” she wails on the infectious chorus.
Tyla gets some of her frustrations out in the visual for “IS IT LOVE.” Director Aerin Moreno captures her with tousled hair and in cute loungewear around her apartment. Though the atmosphere appears relaxed, there’s a palpable tension as Tyla sings, alluringly dances and touches her body. When she stands in front of a wall of glass bricks, a man’s silhouette appears behind her, almost ghost-like.
After that, some freaky things start to happen in her apartment. Broken glass covers the floor, the room floods and electrical outlets spark while she continues her choreography and breakdown. We’re not sure what’s going on, but Tyla may need to find somewhere else to live and a new man who can fulfill her needs while she’s at it.
“IS IT LOVE” is another genre-blending song for the dance floor from Tyla and hints at what’s to come on A*POP. The 14-track set will be released on FAX Records/Epic Records and is currently available for pre-order/pre-save.
