The release of PJ Morton’s double album Saturday Night, Sunday Morning is coming at us like a freight train, and he’s our friendly conductor. The forthcoming project from the multitalented Morton arrives on Juneteenth (Friday, June 19th) and will consist of one album of solely R&B/soul songs and a second album of all gospel music. He’s given us a preview of what’s on the way with the singles “Mutual,” “Mercy” and “Sell My Soul,” and he continues to speak to our hearts and souls with his latest “Close Enough.”
Written and produced by Morton, “Close Enough” is another track from the “Sunday Morning” side of the collection. He sings to anyone going through life’s trials and tribulations and encourages them to keep the faith and hold fast to the Lord.
“Close Enough” opens with PJ simply playing the piano as he gets right into his counseling ministry. “I can clearly see you’re hurting / You feel so lost and you’re searching / And nothing seems to be working / And you’re getting to the point of giving in,” he croons to whoever needs to hear this word. “But you haven’t completely lost the faith / You still believe that there is a way / For Him to take all this pain away / Mmm, today / I can hear you say.”
Morton then has a talk with God on the chorus, singing, “If I could get close enough / That I could touch / The hem of Your garment / Not asking for much / I just have a feeling / That’s all I need for healing / I just know / That I’ll be made whole.”
The visualizer for “Close Enough” is a single-camera shoot of PJ sitting at the piano. Dressed in a suit and tie, he’s Sunday fly as he takes us to church. While tickling the ivories, he sings into the camera and rocks side to side, fully getting into the moment and the music.
