Lizzo’s fifth album BITCH will be in our hands this Friday (June 5th), and she’s been promoting the set heavily online and off. She’s been all over our timelines and popping out from coast to coast — from plastering outdoor walls in L.A. with album posters to kicking it in D.C. with a pop-up performance on Live From The Front Porch.
For her debut on the Front Porch, Lizzo decided to get the whole D.C. experience and performed her first-ever go-go. She was backed by the legendary go-go band UCB, whose song “Sexy Lady” she samples for her reworked version entitled “Sexy Ladies,” both of which sample The System classic “Don’t Disturb This Groove.” She was also outfitted in a custommade set by iconic D.C. streetwear brand Madness.
UCB played the bassline to The O’Jays’ “For The Love Of Money” for Lizzo’s entrance music, and she strolled out with a red plastic cup in her hand singing the song’s hook. We don’t know what she was sipping on inside the house, but whatever was in that red cup had her feeling nice as she got the party started with “About Damn Time.”
“Front Porch is the place to be! D.C. is the place to be!” she exclaimed, before later ending that song with, “Front Porch, it’s about damn time!”
“Truth Hurts” was next in her set, and UCB gave it a slight rock edge. Lizzo switched the lyrics up a little, too, trading her man on the Minnesota Vikings for, “A new man on the Washington Redskins,” referring to the Washington Commanders by their previous name. UCB added some mambo sauce toward the end of the song, which led Lizzo to say, “I want some real go-go s**t,” and they delivered.
Before getting into her next selection “Good As Hell,” Lizzo shared a few words. “It feel good to be in D.C., y’all. It feel actually good as hell. This is my first go-go, so it’s pretty iconic. Thanks, Front Porch, for letting a b***h go, go,” she quipped.
“I think we need to turn it up a little but more,” Lizzo said to introduce the final song of her set. As expected, she ended with “Sexy Ladies” and it was time for UCB to get it crankin’. UCB founding member Roc Mikey stepped out of the crib in a coordinating Madness ’fit to match Lizzo’s fly. She sang the song’s catchy chorus originated by vocalist Tré before Roc Mikey spit a hot 16.
Lizzo had some bars of her own that she got off when she wasn’t singing, twerking or still holding on to that red cup. She interjected with a shout out for all the sexy ladies. “This for all my girls. Big girls. Slim girls. BBLs. Naturals,” she cleverly stated.
