Kehlani kicks up some dust in the visual for “Cruise Control” and checks off dancing in the desert from the list of classic R&B music video tropes that she’s putting her spin on. An astute student of the genre, Kehlani and a troupe of six dancers transport us to an arid location where they perform dynamic choreography in coordinating merlot-colored ’fits. We also get solo scenes of the artist in several stunning looks that show off her toned physique while she sings in the wilderness about her trepidation in getting involved with her best friend.
“Cruise Control,” the penultimate track on her self-titled set Kehlani, has quickly become a fan favorite and is the fourth song from the album to get a music video. It follows clips for “Folded” and “Out The Window,” which were released last year, and the Missy Elliott-featuring “Back And Forth,” which just debuted last week. We’re surprised to have received another video from Kehlani so quickly, but she locked in with her team to make something happen.
“[I] decided we needed to shoot a video a few days ago, went out and shot it, turned it around in a few days time,” she bragged on Instagram with shout-outs to director Gabe Phoenix, editor Vinnie Hobbs and choreographers Dario Boatner and Dominique Battiste. Phoenix confirmed the rapid release, sharing on his IG, “Shot on Monday… released today.”
The clip for “Cruise Control” may have been pulled together in a few business days, but it definitely doesn’t look like it. Kehlani and crew executed her vision with precision and delivered perfection with the quickness.
We appreciate Kehlani for not sitting on this and blessing us with this “Cruise Control” visual so soon after “Back And Forth,” which still has us in a chokehold, mind you. We can’t wait to see what other surprises she has in store this summer. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we need to learn this choreography ASAPtually before the Kehlani World Tour starts in August.
