Eric Benét has quickly become the Internet’s favorite uncle with his hilarious takes on life in general and very pointed commentary about our current political climate. The celebrated singer-songwriter is now putting that message in the music with his newest single “Who’s Gonna Save Us?” and he isn’t holding his tongue.
Benét teams up with Camper to create the modern-day protest song that taps into the long history of protest music with a sound inspired by the ’70s era when such songs were more commonplace. That includes a mournful lead guitar, fast-paced drums and rhythm guitar, horns and hand claps that keep things feeling lively as the message is delivered.
Speaking of the message, Eric is also looking to the 1970s as a guiding point — with a very clear homage to Curtis Mayfield — as he makes plain what the hell is going on. The lyrics point to many things that plague society in general, including disease, war, malignant capitalism and pollution. But he also makes sure to call out a few things directly — namely his references to ICE, politicians and white supremacists — in case you weren’t sure of exactly is causing most of the distress.
But ultimately, he puts the responsibility for rescuing the world on our shoulders on the chorus, singing, “Who’s gonna save us / Nobody, nobody’s gonna save us / If we don’t, you know.”
The singer broke down what he was aiming for on the song in an Instagram post, saying, “This song is really about the consciousness of being aware of what’s happening and also the fact that if we, the people, unite our voices, we are much stronger than they could’ve ever imagined that we will be.” We say amen to that and hope that many more of his contemporaries follow suit in speaking out.
It looks as though “Who’s Gonna Save Us?” will also serve as the lead single from an as-yet-untitled new album from Eric Benét set to arrive in the near future. While we’ll have to wait for the performer to be ready to divulge more info, we won’t have to wait long for a visual for the song. He also took to IG to announce that the official video will arrive this Friday, June 19th.
