PJ Morton is a few weeks away from the Juneteenth release of his new project Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, and he’s keeping his foot on necks during this rollout. He introduced the double album, which will feature half R&B/soul and half gospel, with the one-two punch of singles “Mutual” and “Mercy” (with their accompanying videos). He keeps the newness coming with his latest audio-visual combo “Sell My Soul.”
Included on the R&B side of Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, “Sell My Soul” finds Morton making it clear that he will never sell out nor sell his soul. As an artist, the struggle may get real at times, but he’s not going out like that.
“I admit sometimes / It gets so rough / And I feel like I had enough / But even in those times / I’m reminded of what I’m made of / And I’m not giving up,” a resolute PJ sings on the pre-chorus. He keeps that same energy on the chorus, singing, “No matter how hard you try / You can’t have control / This I promise you / I will never sell my soul.”
The visual for “Sell My Soul” takes us inside a jam session with PJ and his three-piece band. The bassist, guitarist and drummer are indeed jamming behind the crooner’s immaculate lead vocals and layered backgrounds. Morton and the musicians color the plain white set with their soulful sounds.
PJ shared some insight into the song on Instagram. “This was the last song I wrote on the album. I had a little block trying to get one more done,” he admitted. “I was on the Maxwell cruise in my room, and the whole thing came to me the night before I performed. I created the music, wrote it and recorded it right there on the ship on my laptop.”
“Felt like D came and hollered at me for a sec. Felt his spirit,” he continued, referencing D’Angelo, whose influence is heard all up and through “Sell My Soul.”
Saturday Night, Sunday Morning is shaping up to be yet another stellar collection of music from PJ Morton. The double album’s Friday, June 19th release date can’t come soon enough, and neither can PJ’s Saturday Night, Sunday Morning Tour, which kicks off on Sunday, July 19th in St. Louis.
