Mýa may be one of the defining artists of ’90s R&B, but she was a child of the ’80s first. The ageless entertainer is returning to the sights and sounds of her childhood on her tenth studio album Retrospect. Set for release on Friday, May 15th, the LP features the slow jam “ASAP” (and its 21 Savage-featuring remix) and her latest single “Just A Little Bit” featuring Too $hort with throwback vibes aplenty from both artists.

Channeling ’80s funk, hip-hop and R&B, “Just A Little Bit” sounds like a lost track from that era with a modern polish. Co-produced by Mýa and MyGuyMars, it’s as if they hopped into a time machine to record it. She gets her groove on atop heavy synths and programmed drums as she flirts with Too $hort throughout the song.

“Just A Little Bit” opens with a playful telephone conversation between them. It’s 2 a.m. and $hort Dog is trying to slide through, but he’s met with Mýa’s sassy attitude on the other end. Their exchange sets the stage for the first verse, where she asks for less talk and more action from him. “Heard alotta talk, baby, why ya’ frontin’ / You ain’t ’bout to hit, ’cause ya’ ain’t done nothin’ / All I ask is you don’t go wastin’ my time / Gotta put in that work,” she sets him straight.

Mýa makes it clear on the chorus that she needs some effort, attention and affection to get her going. “Just a little bit / We can get it started off right / Just a little bit / Break me off, ya’ know what I like / Just a little bit / Come see about me, come see about we,” she sings.

There’s no parking on the dance floor for Mýa and Too $hort in the City James-directed video for “Just A Little Bit.” She looks like she stepped off the set of Soul Train in a sexy yet sophisticated long black dress with a thigh-high slit. Her hair and makeup are ’80s glam as she twirls, body rolls and does a myriad of old-school dance moves under the laser lights. Too $hort doesn’t bust any moves, but he does step out from the shadows to make his presence known and join Mýa for some camera time.

Mýa is excited to bring more vintage vibes like those heard on “Just A. Little Bit” and “ASAP” to life on Retrospect.

“We created this project with the intention to transport us back to a special time in music and culture that brought so much love, laughter, joy and reflection to our lives,” Mýa said in a press release. “The days of cassette tapes, vinyl, the most amazing gatherings, concerts, house parties, skate nights and date nights. Who’s ready to go back?!”

Mýa is speaking our Gen X and Millennial love language, and Retrospect sounds like our kinda carrying on. In addition to Too $hort and 21 Savage, guests include rappers Snoop DoggJoyner LucasD-NiceDizzy Wright and Phil Adé. The album will be released on her independent label Planet 9 and distributed by Virgin Music Group. Retrospect is currently available for pre-save on digital music services before it drops next Friday.

The multifaceted entertainer promises, “The world has yet to receive the best of Mýa.” Given her track record of excellence, we can’t wait for her next move.
