Ledisi is headed to the Great White Way! The GRAMMY Award-winning singer has dabbled in acting throughout her decades-long career, with roles both on the stage and in films. She’s even been featured on Broadway, with supporting roles in Caroline, Or Change, Hair and The Life. However, she’s now secured her first-ever Broadway principal role in the upcoming historical musical Wanted.
Wanted tells the story of sisters Mary and Martha Clarke, played by Solea Pfeiffer and Liisi LaFontaine respectively, Black twins who passed as white in Texas in 1893. The sisters eventually become outlaws as they attempt to settle the sharecropper debt of their mother and stop her from losing her home. Ledisi will join the production in the role of the twins’ mother, Tallulah Clarke.
“I am beyond thrilled to join the cast of Wanted. My first Broadway principal role, and I still can’t believe it,” Ledisi remarked in a press statement. “I keep thinking about the journey, God’s timing, and the importance of legacy.”
We also got a preview of what’s to come when Ledisi joined Pfeiffer and LaFontaine for a special performance of songs from the musical. A clip of one of the songs, “Inheritance,” was released to the public, and it shows why the performer is a perfect fit for the show. The song has a gospel tinge, and Ledisi plays into it beautifully, with a full-throated, show-stopping belt that had even her co-stars in awe of her talents.
Wanted is set to make its bow on Broadway with previews starting on October 15th at the James Earl Jones Theater. The show will then officially open on November 8th.
