Johnny Gill celebrated his 60th birthday this year by giving his fans the gift of new music. Fresh off of traveling coast-to-coast on The New Edition Way Tour with his New Edition family, Toni Braxton and Boyz II Men, the sexagenarian delivers another timeless slow jam for our collections with the song “A Dance, A Kiss.”
JG enlists Snoop Dogg and Priest “Soopafly” Brooks on production, and the trio co-wrote the song with Justin Randall Keitt. “A Dance, A Kiss” begins with a sultry instrumental intro featuring bass, violin, drums and saxophone to set the tone. Johnny then sets the scene, singing about the magnetic attraction between two people on the dance floor as they move to the rhythm of love.
“It started slow / A sway, a spin / The lights were low / The room was still / Her dress like fire / His hands unsure, two hearts that dance searching for more,” Gill soulfully sings about the budding romance on the first verse. The heat then rises on the chorus, and their connection grows. “A dance, a kiss, a love / Steps to the rhythm of the stars above / A dance, a kiss, a love / We found the family in the music of,” he sings with the background vocalists adding their harmonies.
The man who brought us Quiet Storm classics like “My, My, My,” “There U Go,” “I’m Still Waiting” and his most recent hit “One Night,” has done it again with “A Dance, A Kiss.” This song is quintessential Johnny Gill, and he sounds superb.
